Hurricane Preparedness for your Lawn/Garden

Hurricane Preparedness for your Lawn/Garden

With hurricane season being in effect as of 1st June 2021, now is the time to seriously consider the preparedness of your commercial and residential properties to face the oncoming tropical storms/hurricanes. There are a number of steps you can take to ensure that your outdoor space is free of hazards and is likely to suffer the least damage possible.

  1. Palm Trees, Hedges and Shade Trees: These should be inspected closely, in order to ensure they are healthy/strong enough to survive the season - if they are not, you may want to consider removing them altogether. If they are too close to any of your structures, they may pose the risk of falling into it. In such cases too, you may want to consider removing them in their entirety. With regards to Palm trees that are healthy and safe, they will need to be groomed and pruned to ensure that no branches or Palms are likely to become a projectile during strong winds of a tropical storm or hurricane.

  2. Drainage Areas: Drainage areas are important during Hurricane season and should be thoroughly checked to ensure that they are clean and free of all debris prior to tropical storm or hurricane. The path of the flowing water should be clear, so that there is no water logging in parking lots, lawn/garden areas. If water is left to stand for a long period of time, it can damage root systems of trees, grass, plant beds and can lead to trees falling even after the storm.

  3. Removal of all Hazards: Any and all items that are at a risk of becoming a projectile during the storm must be removed. This includes everything from trash cans, playhouses, bird feeders, barbeque pits, planter pots, hanging baskets and lawn furniture. Any items that cannot be stored securely or safely need to be discarded.
